Procedure


The goal in the admission process is to work closely with you to help determine whether our program and philosophy is a “good fit” with your goals and family values. Montessori education is concerned with the development of the whole child and our methods are most successful when there is a high degree of congruence between home and school expectations. We are currently accepting applications for a limited number of immediate preschool openings. We are also accepting applications for our wait list for the next two school years.

 

Telephone Follow up:

After your phone or email inquiry, the office will telephone you to answer your initial questions and gather basic information about what you are looking for in a school. An appointment for a tour and observation may be scheduled either at this time or with a follow up call.

 

Observation:

We will schedule a time for prospective parents to observe a classroom in session.  This is a valuable and unique step in our admissions process, giving parents an opportunity to observe and experience a functioning Montessori classroom. After the observation you will have an opportunity to discuss your impressions and questions with our Head of School, Laura Lai.

 

Application:

Once you have decided that Montessori School of Yakima is a good fit for your child, we will have you submit our Pre-Registration form along with a $100 non-refundable registration fee.

 

Interview

We will contact you once the application is received to get to know your child and family better. This information helps us to determine placement and gives us an idea of how we can best serve your family.

 

Acceptance/Placement:

We begin making admission decisions for the upcoming school year in March. Placement decisions are made by the Administration. We attempt to balance age, gender and the diverse needs of our student body in each classroom. Information gathered from paperwork and conversations with parents will assist us in finding the best placement for your child.  Please note any special considerations that may be useful in this process. New Early Childhood students are considered for admittance according to the following priority:

  • Younger siblings of currently enrolled students, or those who attended previously.
  • Currently enrolled students who want to move to extended day are given spaces according to their age (oldest first).
  • New students according to space available for their age, gender and the order (date) in which they applied.

In the primary classroom a child may be invited by their teacher to attend the full day if they are able to show readiness through a variety of factors.  Such factors include, but are not limited to, children age 4-1/2 or older, academic ability, ability to concentrate for long periods, self-control and self-direction in the classroom.

 

Notification of Admissions Status

If you are applying for an upcoming school year, you will be notified by mail of your child’s admissions status in the spring. If admitted, you will be sent an enrollment contract and participation agreement which must be returned within 2 weeks with the first month’s tuition to reserve the space. If you are applying for the current school year, we will contact you as soon as possible to set up enrollment and a start date.
In the event that our enrollment is full, we will place your child on our wait list. At that time, you will be given the opportunity to choose between forfeiture of your registration fee or remaining on the wait list in case of future openings. You will be contacted as soon as a space is available for your child. 
Once placements are determined the teacher with whom the child is placed will contact the family to arrange a meeting.  Classroom orientations are scheduled prior to the first day of school, or before a new student begins.  During this meeting, the teacher orients them to the classroom and assess the child’s readiness.
